Historically, many physicians have found themselves ill-prepared to face the non-clinical aspects of practice. ACP's Council of Young Physicians and the Practice Management Center have developed "The Business of Medicine 101" to help fill that gap. The faculty is composed of internists with in-depth experience in leading their own practices, supplemented by selected management specialists. They will present a core curriculum of practical business training selected to meet the needs of practicing physicians, from solo practitioners to those employed in larger groups. Taught in a very interactive manner, the course focuses on the basics but is presented in the context of the growing economic, legal, time, and information pressures confronting internists in today's tough environment.

Learning Objectives:

  • Acquire core business skills in coding, personnel supervision, finance, contract negotiations, practice information technology, and operational efficiency.
  • Understand the influence of external economic and regulatory forces on the current practice of medicine.
  • Learn effective strategies for malpractice avoidance, leading care teams, negotiating an employment contract, increasing your own productivity, and enhancing practice revenue.
