This Pre-Course provides the opportunity for the participant to understand the principles of diagnosis and management of common clinical problems and conditions encountered in the intensive care unit. Particular attention is placed on the acute management of critically ill adult patients with a wide variety of processes. Topics include acute coronary syndromes and myocardial infarction, acute stroke management, acute lung injury and ARDS, DVT and pulmonary embolism, therapeutic hypothermia, septic shock, severe pneumonia, coagulation disorders, and neurological monitoring. Also discussed are the management of patients with various infectious diseases and approaches to nutritional, pharmacologic, and mechanical ventilatory support of the critically ill patient. There will also be a discussion of strategies to prevent complications of critical illness.
