Clinical questions to be addressed:
Increase awareness of the problem of elder abuse;
Provide an overview of state elder abuse laws;
Improve understanding of and provide alternative strategies for handling the conflicts between mandatory reporting laws and patient rights to confidentiality and respect for autonomy and family/caregiver objections to reporting; and
Increase understanding of the complexities of state reporting mandates and the legal consequences of failure to comply.
