This course provides the opportunity for the participant to understand the principles of diagnosis and management of common clinical problems and conditions encountered in the intensive care unit. Particular attention is placed on the acute management of critically ill adult patients with a wide variety of processes. Topics include acute coronary syndromes and myocardial infarction, acute stroke management, acute lung injury and ARDS, DVT and pulmonary embolism, electrolyte and acid-base disorders, drug overdose, septic shock, and hormone deficiency states. Also discussed are the management of patients with a wide variety of infectious diseases and approaches to nutritional, pharmacologic, and mechanical ventilatory support of the critically ill patient.
Learning Objectives:
1. Update the internist on common disorders and diseases encountered in the intensive care unit. 2. Review the diagnostic techniques used in the management of the critically ill adult. 3. Discuss recommendations for management of common critical illnesses encountered in the intensive care unit.
